Optic
Art

Everyday there is over 29,000 optical lenses deposited into landfill, adding to the growing impacted on our already stressed environment. Optic Art and Jewellery is designed to take a disposable object and turn it into a rethought, recycled and reimagined wearable piece of art.

In this day and age of ‘I  want it, I want it new', the world is becoming over run with discarded seemingly unusable items.  Optic Art jewellery is my way of taking old and nolonger needed prescription and blank eye glasses lenses and repurposing them into a wearable piece of Art  .By creating a thing of beauty out of a discarded object,  Iaim to in my own small way, give back to the earth by not adding to the growing piles of rubbish going into landfill.

As an optical dispenser at Eye Supply Optometrists, I see every day the amount of old, prescription and blank lenses going into landfill. For the past year I have been making ‘Optic Art’ jewellery out of the lenses and have exhibited them in the Lux Gallery as well as selling them online. As an extension of this project and in conjunction with the ‘Be Your Own Kind of Beautiful’ project (positive body image artworks and photography) I came up with the concept of a dress made from these discarded lenses. I liked the idea of using lenses that have “seen” life and experienced different things to bring together into a dress.
